Artist Statement
What is it: is man only a blunder of God, or God only a blunder of man?
--Wilhelm Friedrich Nietzsche
What is my art really about… is it about formalistic aesthetics? Yes… but
more. My
work concerns an education of being and an exploration of my perceptions of
reality
and sharing of my insights with others. It is a dialogue that is ultimately
a synthesis—a
coming together of matter and energy—conscious and unconscious. The ideas
and
thoughts I share are hinged on my faith that I am not unique. I trust in the
fact my
experience is not singular although insight is gathered from my experiences
formed as
a gay individual growing up in the Midwest and living much of my life in New
York City
with HIV and watching many friends die.
My medium is varied but most of my work includes the figure in some manner
because
it is through human experience that we communicate and identify. The figure
provides
the opportunity to explore our physiology as it relates to being—dualistic
or monolithic.
The medium I choose most often includes a digital component. I often project
images
because being composed of light it refers to our temporal nature. Drawing combined
with the electronic medium, represents the ultimate metaphor for man—matter
and
energy.
